| CHARACTER OF THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL 
       In positions at this level, incumbents perform a variety of support duties 
        of  moderate complexity requiring a knowledge of library techniques 
        and procedures.  Incumbents work under general supervision with some 
        degree of independence.  The supervision of others may be a requirement, 
        however, incumbents may only assist in the introductory training or assigning 
        and reviewing the work of other employees at the same or lower levels. 
        Some positions may have responsibility for the security of library premises.

    CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES WHICH ARE INTENDED 
      TO ILLUSTRATE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL AND SHOULD 
      NOT BE INTERPRETED AS A DESCRIPTION OF ANY ONE INDIVIDUAL POSITION WITHIN 
      THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL 
      
        - Receives, records, sorts and distributes incoming and prepares outgoing 
          materials and assists in annual inventory
 
        - Compiles informational and statistical data and prepares standard 
          reports
 
        -  Assists in assigning and reviewing the work of other employees at 
          a lower level
 
        - Repairs, creates binding/covers and order materials for mending Library 
          Resources 
 
        - Coordinates binding of serial resources, and staff, to ensure bound 
          materials are processed and shelved 
 
        -  Enters, verifies, changes and maintains records (e.g. ILS) of new 
          or re-catalogued materials in automated files using computer terminals 
          in accordance with established procedures 
 
        -  Prepares, scans and processes materials for addition to systems and/or 
          website(s) 
 
        -  Assists in preparing and processing orders manually or electronically, 
          reporting damaged materials 
 
        -  Processes and repairs new materials, including labels, barcodes, 
          stamping, binding, security strips, etc. 
 
        -  Ensures reserve materials and indexes are shelved and maintained 
          in a current and orderly condition and instructs patrons on the availability 
          and use of these resources 
 
        -  May supervise and schedule staff, carry out performance evaluations 
          and motivate staff, to ensure staff are performing duties correctly 
        
 
        -  Carries out on-the-job training for shelving functions 
 
        -  Performs shelf reading to locate mis-shelved materials and checks 
          the shelves to ensure resources are shelved correctly
 
        -  Advises Library Administration of needed supplies and book trucks 
        
 
        -  Coordinates library material and staff in moves and relocations, 
          participates in ongoing collection analysis and space allocations 
 
        -  May provide basic training, service and/or troubleshooting on: photocopiers, 
          computers and other equipment 
 
        -  Assists with annual inventory and identifies missing items and/or 
          incorrect call numbers 
 
        -  Develops policies and procedures for a unit concerning: activities, 
          resources, people and use of time 
 
        -  Maintains and provides access to a particular collection by sorting, 
          arranging and filing materials; updating systems (e.g. Integrated Library 
          System) with received materials; maintaining usage statistics and assisting 
          patrons in using a collection
 
        -  Using well established procedures, provides basic preservation activities 
          for archival and other Library Resources 
 
        -  Attends meetings and participates in committees, projects/assignments 
        
 
        - Processes books, materials and I.D. cards entering or returning from 
          circulation or reserve areas using an automated circulation system 
 
        -  Processes materials for security detection, de-sensitizes books on 
          loan, deals tactfully with patrons on circulation issues, explains library 
          policy and refers all serious cases to a senior staff member 
 
        -  Operates a camera to take personal photos, issues and updates identification 
          cards for library patrons 
 
        -  Provides circulation services for materials including assisting in 
          locating and re-shelving items and entering the status of material on 
          computer terminals and retrieving materials stored on and off campus 
        
 
        -  Participates in special projects and other related duties as required 
          or assigned

    | QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED 
       The minimum qualifications necessary for acceptable (satisfactory)  
        performance are: 
       Level of Formal Education  
       
        -  High school completion
 
        -  A 2 year diploma from a recognized library technician's program would 
          be an asset
 
       
      Experience 
      
        -  Two years of directly related library experience 
 
        - General experience with standard Windows and Internet software environments
 
        -  or
 
        -  An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience
 
        - Working knowledge of circulation standards, procedures and modules 
          for some positions
 
       
      Skills and Abilities  
      
        -  Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
 
        -  Ability to apply automated and manual procedures
 
        -  Ability to work independently and cooperatively with others
 
        - Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, students, 
          and the public
 
        -  Some positions may require the ability to train and direct the work 
          of others
 
        - Ability to read and work with alphabetic and numeric filing systems
