Research Week: Discovering Student Research Opportunities: A Panel Discussion

Join us for an engaging panel discussion featuring student researchers Faith Akinyemi, Christina Duerksen, Safia Soussi Gounni, Allyza Tabirara and moderated by Dr. Michael Holden, Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Education. This event will explore the paths students have taken to pursue research, highlighting their accomplishments and offering practical advice on preparing strong applications for research awards. Panelists will share tips on approaching potential supervisors, navigating the application process, and setting yourself up for success. A Q&A session will follow, giving attendees a chance to ask questions and connect directly with panelists.

Speaker and Moderator Bios

Dr. Michael Holden is an assistant professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Winnipeg. His research examines the complexities of classroom assessment, with a focus on collaborating with teachers to transform their assessment practices to support robust student learning.

Faith Akinyemi is currently completing her master’s program in Applied Computer Science and Society at the University of Winnipeg. Her research focuses on digital agriculture, computer vision, and the application of machine learning for crop yield prediction.

Claire Davis (bio coming soon!)

Christina Duerksen is in her final year of the After Degree program in the Faculty of Education. Her research interests include Alternative Intelligence and education, K-12 assessment practices, inner city education, and English Literature.

Safia Soussi Gounni is a fourth year Honours Anthropology Student with a Minor in East Asian Languages and Culture. Her research interests include: The decolonization of Archaeology, Bronze Age and Iron Age development of civilization and the use of Archaeobotany to reconstruct diets of past populations.

Jessica de Kort, is a 5th year undergraduate student in physics, specializing in medical physics. She has completed two summers of research in deep learning for prostate cancer brachytherapy at the University of Manitoba, one summer of research at 极品少妇XXXX做受 to measure axon diameters in mice brains, and she is currently working on integrating a deep learning segmentation model to identify and segment individual cells in mouse brain images for my honours thesis.

Allyza Tabirara (she/her) is a fourth-year Biology major whose research interests focus on freshwater conservation, specifically concerning water quality and the health of Lake Winnipeg and other water bodies in Manitoba.
